The new PhD programme in Tourism will be available starting in the 2018/19 academic year. On 23 April, the evaluation board of the Quality Assurance Agency for the University System in Catalonia (AQU) gave green light to the proposal put forward jointly by the UAB's Department of Geography and School of Tourism and Hotel Management.

This programme will permit researchers to specialise in pioneering academic research related to one of the areas of greatest impact and economic, social and regional relevance, in continuous expansion, as is the tourism sector. This is the first PhD programme exclusively focused on Tourism offered in the Barcelona area.

Tourism is a strategic sector for the economy, society and region (both in Catalonia and in Spain it represents approximately 10% of its Gross Domestic Product). This growth of the tourist market and its economic, social, environmental and regional effects generates unique and singular research opportunities which will gave way to the creation of new knowledge aimed at fostering sustainable, innovative and effectively managed tourism development.

The programme aims to improve the transfer of knowledge from the academic world to society through the sector's public and private agents. Public institutions (local and regional) need new knowledge to be able to create an adequate social and sustainable strategy plan. Private institutions seek new knowledge related to the creation of innovative products, effective management tools, optimisation of available resources, and an adequate connection with the surrounding region in social and environmental terms.
