ICTA-UAB researcher Patrizia Ziveri took part at the Ocean Acidification Week, organised from 8-10th September, by the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network. This virtual multi-day forum aimed at highlighting ocean acidification research and initiatives, and during her talk, Patrizia Ziveri offered an overview of her research in the Mediterranean and the knowledge gaps.

She presented a meta-analysis compiling the OA research carried out on Mediterranean with a focus on research performed after 2014 (the completion of the European coordinated project Mediterranean Sea acidification in a changing climate (MedSeA). She explained that in the Mediterranean Sea, research on this topic is heavily concentrated in Western European nations but this is becoming more dispersed with time.

She stated that although a more comprehensive understanding of how OA is changing the chemistry of the Mediterranean is now available, knowledge of the complex biological consequences for endemic ecosystems is limited and the broader socio-economic impacts of OA for Mediterranean-dependent societies are poorly explored.

The Ocean Acidification Week, organised in collaboration with NOAA, OA-ICC and UNESCO-IOC, aimed to engage the ocean acidification and broader oceanographic communities, raise awareness to the issue of ocean acidification, and bring attention to the global efforts being conducted related to monitoring, research, capacity building, capacity needs, and education.
