A scientific study on a low-carbon energy transition carried out by ICTA-UAB researchers Aljoša Slameršak and Giorgos Kallis has been awarded a special mention in the City of Barcelona Award in the category of Environmental and Earth Sciences.

ALJOSA SLAMERZAK AND GIORGOS KALLIS

The council recognises the study Energy requirements and carbon emissions for a low-carbon energy transition, published in the scientific journal Nature last November, for its socio-economic and political implications and scientific commitment to the energy transition in the context of global change.

The study, also co-authored by researcher Daniel O'Neil from the University of Leeds, shows that the process of transitioning to a low-carbon energy system could lead to significant global emissions, consuming much of the remaining carbon budget, and thus leaving less emissions for socio-economic processes and activities than widely thought.

The City of Barcelona Award represents the highest recognition that the city gives to its citizens. It aims to reward excellence in different fields of creativity, research and culture in the city throughout the year. The winners are chosen by a jury of renowned representatives from each sector, who conduct a comprehensive study of all projects in each area. This year the jury was made up of Esther Garcés (president), Paula Bruna, Marina Monsonís, Santiago Giralt and Valentí Sallarès.

The award, which was announced on Monday 30 January, will be presented at a ceremony to be held on 15 February at 6 p.m. in the Saló de Cent of Barcelona City Council.
