ICTA-UAB researcher Lucía Argüelles gets the Geoforum Best Student Paper Prize
The ICTA-UAB researcher Lucía Argüelles has been awarded the "Best Student Paper Prize 2018" for the journal Geoforum, for the paper "Power and privilege in alternative civic practices: Examining imaginaries of change and embedded rationalities in community economies". The award consists of $500 from AAG as a travel bursary for future conferences.
This empirical paper adds to important debates on geography about the neoliberalization of environmental governance and the significance of alternative economic projects. The paper incorporates a critical lense, highlighting the privilege dimension of community-based economies. Methodologically, it uses qualitative techniques in order to understand how 50 members of 11 community economy initiatives understand social change and the role of their communities on performing it. The descritption of an "altermative imaginary of change" is one of the main outcomes of the article.
