240 students from Sabadell and Terrassa present their research projects at the UAB

Els alumnes han investigat com és la qualitat de l’aire al seu centre escolar i als voltants i quines són les possibles accions que es podrien implementar per millorar-la. Els treballs els han fet en el marc del projecte europeu Multipliers, en què participa la UAB. Aquest projecte pretén involucrar els estudiants de secundària en la difusió del coneixement científic que ells mateixos generen en col·laboració amb experts i expertes en recerca educativa, científica i de l’enginyeria, tot apropant la ciència a les aules de manera innovadora, més tangible i atractiva.

La jornada comprèn també quatre tallers perquè els alumnes aprenguin com poden divulgar el que han après durant el curs. Treballaran amb la il·lustradora Núria Inés (Tinta Fina) per crear un storytelling, exerciran de periodistes i faran un stop-motion. També participaran en diferents jocs en què hauran de posar en marxa les seves habilitats i destreses per aconseguir una ciutat menys contaminada.

Aprendre ciència fent ciència

Amb els treballs els alumnes han après ciència i sobre ciència fent ciència. S’han involucrat en tot el procés de fer, parlar i pensar en ciència i enginyeria fent una tasca anàloga a la que fan els investigadors: recollida i processament de dades, anàlisi crítica, discussió i avaluació de beneficis i conseqüències de qüestions polifacètiques i presa de decisions.

Per dur a terme les seves recerques s’ha establert una xarxa de col·laboració o comunitat de ciència oberta (OSC), en què els investigadors han col·laborat en el disseny dels materials educatius, tant per als alumnes com per als seus docents. Hi han participat científics i experts de l’Escola d’Enginyeria, l’Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA), el Centre de Visió per Computador (CVC), l’Institut de Ciències de l’Educació (ICE) i els Open Labs de la UAB, i altres centres i entitats, com el CESIRE, l’ISGlobal, l’IAAC i la Fundació la Caixa.

En la jornada final del projecte l’alumnat presenta el treball als investigadors dels centres participants i els materials amb què ha explicat els resultats a les seves escoles, famílies i comunitats, mitjançat vídeos, infografies o pòsters, entre d’altres formats.

Aprenentatge innovador amb reptes mediambientals

Multipliers és un projecte del programa Horizon 2020 de la Unió Europea per ampliar les oportunitats d’aprenentatge científic dels alumnes i despertar el seu interès davant els reptes socials i mediambientals rellevants per a la seva vida quotidiana. Es duu a terme a sis països: Alemanya, Xipre, Eslovènia, Itàlia i Espanya, amb els centres de Sabadell i Terrassa, on el coordinen Digna Couso i Èlia Tena, investigadores del Departament de Didàctica de la Matemàtica i les Ciències Experimentals de la UAB, juntament amb altres experts del seu equip de recerca.

El projecte explora les possibilitats d’aprenentatge científic mitjançat el concepte d’escola oberta, fomentant la cooperació entre estudiants, escoles, famílies, comunitats locals, organitzacions de la societat civil, agents educatius de l’entorn informal, universitats, mitjans de comunicació i empreses. En cada país s’ha creat una xarxa de col·laboració amb diferents agents. Els temes investigats en altres països han estat la biodiversitat i serveis ecosistèmics, les vacunes, els usos i protecció dels boscos, la resistència antimicrobiana i l’aigua neta i el seu sanejament.

«Amb Multipliers busquem influir en el desenvolupament de la competència científica i la consciencia socioambiental de l’alumnat, proporcionant a educadors i responsables polítics directrius i recomanacions per a l’adopció de l’escola oberta», explica Digna Couso. «Volem fer partícips els estudiants en el procés de creació de coneixement científic local, i que ells mateixos  puguin esdevenir “multiplicadors” del coneixement cap a les seves famílies i comunitats de referència», conclou.

The students investigated the air quality in their school and the surrounding area and the possible actions that could be implemented to improve it. The work was carried out within the framework of the European project Multipliers, in which the UAB participates. This project aims to involve secondary school students in the dissemination of scientific knowledge that they themselves generate in collaboration with experts in educational, scientific and engineering research, bringing science to the classroom in an innovative, more tangible and attractive way.

The day also includes four workshops for students to learn how they can disseminate what they have learned during the course. They will work with illustrator Núria Inés (Tinta Fina) to create a storytelling, act as journalists and make a stop-motion. They will also take part in different games in which they will have to use their skills and abilities to achieve a less polluted city.

Learning science by doing science

By carrying out the projects, the students have learned about and from science by doing science. They have been involved in the whole process of doing, talking and thinking about science and engineering by carrying out a task analogous to that of researchers: data collection and processing, critical analysis, discussion and evaluation of benefits and consequences of multifaceted issues and decision making.

To carry out their research, a collaborative network or open science community (OSC) has been established, in which researchers have collaborated in the design of educational materials for both students and their teachers. Scientists and experts from the School of Engineering, the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA), the Computer Vision Centre (CVC), the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) and the Open Labs of the UAB, and other centres and organisations, such as CESIRE, ISGlobal, IAAC and the La Caixa Foundation, participated in the project.

On the final day of the project, students present their work to researchers from the participating centres and the materials they have used to explain the results in their schools, families and communities, through videos, infographics and posters, among other formats.

Innovative learning with environmental challenges

Multipliers is a project of the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme to expand scientific learning opportunities for students and awaken their interest in social and environmental challenges relevant to their daily lives. It is carried out in six countries: Germany, Cyprus, Slovenia, Italy and Spain, with the centres of Sabadell and Terrassa, where it is coordinated by Digna Couso and Èlia Tena, researchers from the Department of Didactics of Mathematics and Experimental Sciences at the UAB, together with other experts from their research team.

The project explores the possibilities of scientific learning through the concept of open school, fostering cooperation between students, schools, families, local communities, civil society organisations, informal educational agents, universities, media and companies. In each country, a collaborative network of different actors has been established. Topics investigated in other countries have included biodiversity and ecosystem services, vaccines, forest uses and protection, antimicrobial resistance, and clean water and sanitation.

"With Multipliers, we aim to influence the development of students' scientific competence and socio-environmental awareness by providing educators and policy makers with guidelines and recommendations for the adoption of the open school," explains Digna Couso. "We want to involve students in the process of creating local scientific knowledge, and that they themselves can become 'multipliers' of knowledge to their families and communities of reference," she concludes.
