This seminar offers participants the opportunity to learn first-hand how indigenous traditions and knowledge can help us to understand the consequences of climate change from a different perspective. 

First, Maui Hudson, interdisciplinary researcher and associate professor at the Te Kotahi Research Institute at the University of Waikato (New Zealand), will tackle what indigenous data sovereignty means for his community and explain different applications of it. His work is based on the application of traditional knowledge of the Māori community in areas as wide-ranging as new technologies, health, the environment and innovation.  

He will help us to understand the rights and interests of his people in terms of data and the different visions that this knowledge can bring to the fight against urgent issues such as climate change. 
 

Adrien Tofighi-Niaki, coordinator for the Local Indicators of Climate Change Impacts Observation Network (LICCI-ON) at ICTA-UAB, will talk about this project, which has been applying Indigenous data sovereignty principles in the context of climate change research and environmental monitoring. The team will be expanding this work in the coming year by assessing how to operationalize Indigenous data governance and sovereignty principles within open-data research contexts, using the LICCI project as a case study. This new project, titled “Research on Indigenous Data Governance Protocols” (RIDaGoP), has recently received an ERC Proof of Concept Grant.
