In this presentation we will talk through the motivations and ambitions of our recent co-authored book All We Want is the Earth (2023). In the book, through a series of written and visual essays, we draw a 'counter-history' of environmentalism , questioning who and what gets counted as 'environmental' in distinct times and places. Kai Heron (Lancaster University) calls it “An act of recovery, a reclaiming of movements and struggles that have been pushed out of frame by dominant interpretations of what gets to count as environmental politics.” By revisiting and linking struggles not always narrated together - including anti-racist, feminist, class-based and anti-decolonial movements - we explore how stages were assembled to make more radical political claims, and what gets lost when environmentalism is thought separately from interlinked concerns.
