Quarter: La Ribera Telf: 932689975 Web: http://casalpoudelafiguera.net/ A commemorative event on Environmental Justice to honour the activist Chico Mendes co-organized by ICTA-UAB, together with Icària Editorial, Revista Ecología Política and Espai Contrabandos, will take place in Barcelona (Spain), next Wednesday 18th of December (18:00 ¿ 21:00). Felipe Milanez, ENTITLE research fellow at Coimbra University, will introduce the session speaking on the question of deforestation in Amazon and the persecution of environmental activists there. Afterwards the documentary ¿Aquí nos vamos a quedar¿ examining the different dimensions of Environmental Justice produced by the Laboratório Multimedia de Conflictos Ambientales (LAMCA) will be projected. The film will be followed by a presentation of the map and database of environmental conflicts from the Environmental Justice Organizations, Liabilities and Trade (EJOLT) project, led by Prof. Joan Martinez-Alier, emeritus professor at ICTA-UAB. Lastly, the session will be closed by members of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais who will present some documentaries about mining in Brazil. Activist Chico Mendes (1944-1988) devoted much of his life to bringing literacy to the natives of the Amazon jungle and was the guiding force behind the movement to organize the rubber tappers in the South American rainforest. He is considered one of the most significant activists who defended the Amazon against deforestation in Acre, Brazil.
