This is a teaching and professional programme in reproductive medicine. Changes in the life model in the western world has meant a considerable increase in sterility and the number of assisted reproduction techniques. Approximately 20% of couples have infertility problems, 40% due to women's problems, 40% due to men's problems and 20% of mixed causes. One of the most important causes of sterility in western countries is the delay in conception by men and women which is directly related to the probability of pregnancy occurring.
Sterility treatment is based on specific therapy according to the diagnosis and fundamentally on the assisted reproduction techniques which require a high level of training and qualifications. According to the Spanish Fertility Society there are 190 Centres for Assisted Reproduction in Spain authorised by the Ministry for Health. Specifically 15% of these are located in Barcelona. The field of human reproduction is the area of gynaecology and biology which has published most in high impact factor journals in the last few decades. In almost all human reproduction journals they appear in the first quartile of the specialisation.
Career opportunities
- Students will learn the techniques of assisted reproduction in the context of a human reproduction unit or centre. These techniques have clearly taken the specialisation forward and will be of benefit to patients.- Students will gain further competence in methodological, research and communication procedures.
- Students will have greater chances of working as reproductive medicine specialists in hospitals, infertility units and assisted reproduction centres.
Internships
UAB masters and graduate diplomas may include or facilitate external academic internships in companies or institutions in order to help the student to achieve a level of expertise that facilitates the insertion or promotion in the workplace.
These internships may be curricular (compulsory) or non-curricular (optional).
- Curricular
Curricular practices are those which are included in the curriculum of the studies and, therefore, must be overcome to obtain the degree. The programme manager will explain you the details of how, where and under what conditions you should do the internship.
- Non-curricular
As a UAB student, you have access to the University occupation portal, the Occupability Service, through which you can participate in selection processes for non-curricular practices as well as getting a contract. In both cases, you need to sign up to the Nexus application.
