The UAB launches a campaign to make the Republican exile visible

The Chair of the Republican Literary Exile (CEXLIR) of the Department of Spanish Studies at the UAB is organising a conference dedicated to the memory of the Republican exile of 1939, with the aim of collecting testimonials from the relatives of exiles. Based on these stories, they will produce a collective book to recover and keep alive the historical memory of those people forced to leave the country. Those interested can give their support to the initiative through the UAB crowdfunding portal.

The first edition of the "Testimonis dels Descendents de l’Exili Republicà de 1939", which will be held on 27 and 28 November 2025 at the conference hall of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities of the UAB, will be a place to meet and reflect on the memory of Republican exiles and the role of later generations in preserving this historical legacy.
The event will bring together researchers, people and descendents of families who lived in exile, with the aim of giving visibility to personal and community experiences that make up the democratic memory of this country. Through a series of round tables, debates and conferences, members will analyse the impact of the Republican exile of 1939 on today's society and how these memories are transmitted to the new generations.
For two days, the voices of twenty descendents will be heard, from all around Spain and France.
Citizen participation for a book of testimonials
The testimonials of those participating in the sessions will be compiled in a book that aims to preserve this highly relevant historic and human legacy. To do so, the UAB is also launching a crowdfunding campaign, entitled "Les veus silenciades de l’exili republicà" and aimed at funding the publication pof the book, as well as research tasks and the compilation of materials which will go towards making visible the true stories of those who had to flee in exile.
"With this campaign we aim to guarantee that the voice of the Republican exiles continues to be present among us and available to all future generations. We thus reaffirm our commitment with recovering the memory of the past and disseminating knowledge, while at the same time open the door to citizen participation in this academic and cultural initiative", states Manuel Aznar Soler, promoter of the project and director of the CEXLIR.
Those interested can show their support for the project through the UAB crowdfunding portal.
