Master description

The master's degree consists of 60 ECTS credits divided into two semester. A slow route is also available for those who cannot take 30 ECTS credits each semester.

The objective of the master's degree in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies is to train professionals, academics and researchers to enter the labour market or conduct research activities in the field of Translation and Interpreting, Language Mediation and Intercultural Studies, as well as in the Social Sciences and Humanities of Modern East Asia.

The master's degree includes four specialisations, two of which are of a professional profile and two are research:

1 . Translation and Intercultural Mediation (professional)
2 . Conference Interpreting (professional)
3 . Translation and Intercultural Studies (research)
4 . Modern East Asia (Research)

The professional profile of the specialisation in Translation and Intercultural Mediation responds to the current need of the labour market for translations and intercultural mediation produced by today's migrations. According to 2004 data by the association of specialised translation centres (Agrupació de Centres Especialitzats en Traducció), the translation industry reached annual volumes of 247 million Euros. The total number of companies included 20 large companies with 550 employees and 700 S&ME with 3,500 employees. The number of freelance translators was 3,500 and the annual growth of this sector was estimated at 6%.
The professional specialisation of Conference Interpreting responds to the growing demand in Catalonia for language mediation in the media and in the organisation of conferences and exhibits, and other international, cultural, sportive, artistic, etc. events, as well as in services offered to international organisations (UN, EU, NATO, etc.). Proof of this consolidated professional field is the number of members (2,600) from 88 different countries who belong to the International Association of Conference Interpreters.
The research profile of the specialisation in Translation and Intercultural Studies responds to the consolidation of these disciplines in scientific fields. The research profile of the specialisation in Modern East Asia responds to a growing demand for specialists in the geopolitical area and the need for research in new areas of studies.
Both profiles are backed by the number of PhD theses (43) and research projects (90) defended in the UAB PhD programme Translation and Intercultural Studies.

The master's degree includes two compulsory modules worth 15 credits each (M1: Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Mediation and M2: Master Thesis), and two or three optional modules to choose from depending on your specialisation, adding up to a total of 30 credits.

Optional modules are the following for each of the specialisations:
