For the new 2026/27 academic year, the UAB Solidarity Foundation (FAS) is opening a new call for university volunteering programmes with social, environmental and health promotion initiatives, taking place in prisons, hospitals, educational centres and on campus. Volunteering is an opportunity to learn, discover new realities, get involved in social transformation, and earn academic credits.

The UAB's Fundació Autònoma Solidària, with a well-established track record in university social action, offers a wide range of programmes so that any member of the UAB community can find an initiative that suits their interests and availability. Last year, more than 400 people volunteered with the FAS, demonstrating the university community's commitment to a fairer and more supportive society.

Volunteers can get involved in initiatives focused on environmental justice, health promotion, equal opportunities, educational success, and the rights of migrants, or provide support to vulnerable individuals and groups. These programs are carried out through mentoring, peer-to-peer interaction, group meetings and committee work, workshops, and participatory and awareness-raising activities.

In addition to the FAS's own programmes, initiatives are also being carried out this year in collaboration with other UAB units, such as the Estudiants de Suport (Support Students), launched jointly with the Service for the Inclusion of Functional Diversity (SIDI), and Ciències Retorna (Science Gives Back), in collaboration with the Faculty of Science.

A transformative experience

Volunteering at the UAB is an opportunity to grow personally, acquire transferable skills, learn about new realities, and contribute positively to the community. Each year, hundreds of people take part in the various programmes and highlight the personal and social impact of the experience.

Alberto León, volunteer of the CROMA programme, highlights the educational and transformative dimension of the project: "We carry out activities and various exercises that foster a critical spirit among the kids that participate, enabling them to resolve conflicts and maintain better social relationships throughout their lives."

Joan Suades, retired UAB lecturer and researcher who volunteered in the justice programme, explains that: "I volunteer for a radio programme in prisons. It is a very interesting activity that, as a retiree, has helped me stay active and has enriched me in many ways—providing knowledge, experiences, and more."

Finally, Rocío Bernal, volunteering in the Refugee Programme, highlights the importance of peer support during the integration process: "I have had the opportunity to support another migrant student, like me, and I feel it has helped me become more aware of the importance of having support throughout this entire integration process."

These testimonials reflect the diversity of profiles and areas of activity of university volunteering, as well as the positive impact it has on both the participants and the community.
