Mountain ecosystems at the Experts' Seat of the Science Carriage
Description:
Bernat Claramunt is a researcher at CREAF and lecturer of Ecology at the UAB. His research focuses on strategies for sustainable development of mountain socio-ecological systems, with a holistic approach that includes not only the natural components of a region, but also its social and economic context. In the expert's seat he will talk with passengers about how climate change modifies these mountain systems and the ecosystem services and the benefits that humans obtain.
The journey will begin at 9:28 a.m. and will go from the Plaça Catalunya ---> Universitat Autònoma stations.

Shaping the Future of Micro- and Nanoplastic Research
Description:
Online conference of the European project PlasticHeal, coordinated from the UAB.
The event, titled “Shaping the Future of Micro- and Nanoplastic Research: Connecting Science, Policy and Industry for Human Health”, marks an important milestone as the project enters its final phase after three years of research dedicated to understanding the impact of micro and nanoplastics (MNPL) on human health. The conference will showcase the results achieved so far and provide a platform for key stakeholders from various fields across Europe to discuss the current state of knowledge, its limitations, and future challenges in researching the impact of MNPL on human health.
The language of the conference is English.
Why attend?
- Presentation of results: Gain insights into the significant findings of the PlasticHeal research.
- Expert discussions: Connect with leading experts to reflect on the needs and limitations of current knowledge and future research challenges.
- Interactive sessions: Engage in debates with policymakers, industry leaders, and standardisation bodies to exchange experiences, concerns, opinions, and expectations about ongoing and future research.
Agenda highlights:
Day 1: Understanding and assessing the risks of micro and nanoplastics
- Presentation of the Risk Assessment Framework for MNPL by Steffen Foss Hansen, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
- In-depth presentations:
- Carcinogenicity and mutagenicity by Alba Hernández Bonilla, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) - principal investigator of the project
- Immunotoxicology by Diego Angosto, Biomedical Research Institute of Murcia (IMIB)
- Gastrointestinal toxicity by Cyrill Bussy, University of Manchester (UoM)
- Roundtable: “Breaking down the framework: Advancing safety for MNPLs.” The discussion will focus on exploring innovative approaches and strategies to address key regulatory gaps.
Day 2: Beyond traditional approaches. Making data valuable.
- Making data valuable by Alba Hernández Bonilla, UAB
- From in vitro advanced models to in vivo data by Hans Bouwmeester, Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
- Defining MNPL exposure: analytical workflows by Thorsten Reemtsma, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and Irina Estrela-Lopis, University of Leipzig.
- Roundtable: “Bridging Science and Policy: Refining models for regulatory impact,” dedicated to discussing how to improve experimental models to meet regulatory needs in the risk assessment of microplastics and nanoplastics.

Presentation of the Catalan Association of Science and Technology Studies
Description:
Researchers from different universities and research centres in Catalonia, including the UAB, have created the Catalan Association of Science and Technology Studies (STS-CAT). The official presentation will take place on 28 February at 9:30 a.m. at the Barcelona Research Residence.
The presentation will feature an inaugural lecture by Wiebe E. Bijker, lecturer and researcher at the University of Maastricht and advisor to the Dutch government as an expert on the relationship between democracy and technology. Biojker is one of the fathers of international Science and Technology Studies and one of the main exponents of the Theory on the Social Construction of Technologies. The engineer, philosopher and PhD in Sociology and History of Technology from the University of Twente (The Netherlands), studies the relationship between the development of technology and society, and how the emergence of new technologies impacts on democracy and can lead to the emergence of a new social order.
The lecture will be followed by a round table (STS in Action) with the participation of Blanca Callén (UAB), Israel Rodríguez (UOC), Ismael Ràfols (Ingenio CSIC-UPV & Univ Leiden) and Vincenzo Pavone (IPP-CSIC), and moderated by the vice-president of the STS-CAT, Núria Vallès (IIIA-CSIC).
The closing speech will be given by Miquel Domènech (UAB), member of the STS-CAT.
Attendance is free, but prior registration is required.

Exploring the Quantum Revolution at the UAB: Join the Q-UAB Days!
Description:
From 5 to 7 May the UAB Faculty of Science will host "Quantum Days at the UAB" (Q-UAB Days), an event organised as part of the United Nations' International Year of Quantum Science and Technology which will bring together renowned researchers and students to explore the latest advances and real-life applications of quantum science.
The event is co-organised by the UAB, the IMB-CNM and the ICMAB, in collaboration with researchers from the ICN2 and the IFAE. It is distributed into three sessions, each taking place from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Sala d'Actes of the Faculty of Science.
Each session will be dedicated to a specific area of quantum science and technology, in which the most recent developments and cutting-edge discoveries will be discussed: Quantum information and Detection on 5 May, Quantum Light and Matter on 6 May and Quantum Chips on 7 May. Each day will conclude with an interactive colloquium in which attendees will be able to engage with researchers, ask questions and discuss the future of quantum technologies.
