Adam Ranson awarded ERC Proof of Concept Grant for NEURODOCK
Dr. Adam Ranson, group leader at the Institute, has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept Grant for NEURODOCK, a project that aims to develop a new technology for studying brain activity in mice under more natural conditions.
Many current neuroscience experiments require researchers to repeatedly handle and restrain animals in order to attach sophisticated imaging equipment. While these methods provide valuable information, they can influence the animals' behaviour and limit the duration and frequency of experiments.
NEURODOCK will develop an automated system that allows mice to voluntarily initiate experiments. When an animal enters a dedicated area, the system will automatically attach a miniature microscope, record or manipulate the activity of identified neurons, and detach the device when the animal leaves. By reducing the need for human intervention, the technology is expected to enable longer-term studies of brain function while improving animal welfare.
The ERC Proof of Concept Grant will support the translation of this technology towards practical application, helping to demonstrate its feasibility and potential impact on neuroscience research.
ERC Proof of Concept Grants are awarded exclusively to researchers who already hold an ERC grant. They provide funding to explore the innovation and commercial or societal potential of research results, bridging the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications.
