The project, titled "Uncovering the Hidden Face of Alzheimer’s Disease", was carried out by high school students Carlota Carvajal and Jana Castaño.

Dr. Lydia Giménez-Llort, Professor of Psychiatry at UAB and researcher at the Institute, together with PhD student Juan Fraile Ramos, mentored the students throughout this project, which approaches Alzheimer’s disease from a translational and biopsychosocial perspective.

The study combines a qualitative survey exploring public knowledge and concerns about Alzheimer’s disease with behavioral analysis of 3xTg-AD mice, a transgenic model commonly used to study dementia. The research also highlights the potential of social interaction as a protective factor, showing the positive effects of cohabitation with other mice on emotional well-being and immune function in affected animals.

This Honorable Mention underscores the value of collaboration between academic institutions and secondary education to inspire scientific vocations and promote a more holistic and humanistic view of neurodegenerative diseases.
