Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that combines traditional methodologies from the humanities and social sciences with digital and computational technologies. This emerging area uses digital tools, databases, data visualisation, and other technological resources to analyse, preserve, and disseminate humanistic knowledge. With the aim of promoting digital transformation and learning in the humanities — and in response to the growing interest among university research groups in increasing both the number and visibility of digital humanities projects — the Digital Humanities Network of the UAB was established in 2016. In 2025, this network was renamed and relaunched as the Digital Humanities Portal at the UAB.
Currently, Digital Humanities at the UAB encompasses a wide range of research projects, SGRs (Consolidated Research Groups officially recognised by the Government of Catalonia), CERs (UAB’s own interdisciplinary research centres), and institutes that span numerous disciplines in the humanities and social sciences — including art, philology, philosophy, history, archaeology, musicology, anthropology, sociology, law, economics, and communication studies. The network also benefits from strong collaboration with ICT research centres that offer technological solutions for the application of emerging technologies in the humanities, such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, and big data.
Digital Humanities have significant potential to address contemporary challenges. They contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage by digitising and making accessible materials at risk of disappearing; they democratise access to knowledge and collective memory; they enable the analysis of social phenomena through the study of large datasets to identify patterns in hate speech, disinformation, or social inequalities; they promote inclusion and diversity by recovering historically marginalised voices and constructing more representative and plural narratives; and they enhance education and public outreach by developing interactive and accessible resources that bring humanistic knowledge to wider audiences.
This new portal has been launched by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and the Office of the Vice-Rector for Innovation, Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship at the UAB, in collaboration with the CORE in Cultural Heritage and the UAB Library Service, with the aim of promoting and disseminating Digital Humanities both within the university and in the wider region.
