David Sánchez-Carracedo participates in a debate on eating disorders, obesity, weight and stigma at the XV AEETCA conference
Professor David Sánchez-Carracedo participated in the debate “S20 - Eating disorders, obesity, weight and stigma” at the AEETCA conference, where he presented the work “Anthropometric measurement in children and adolescents in educational settings. Have we forgotten the principle of primum non nocere?”
The debate also included Pedro Manuel Ruiz Lázaro, Head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section at Hospital Clínico Universitario Lozano Blesa in Zaragoza, and Ana Rosa Sepúlveda García, Associate Professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid. In his contribution, Sánchez-Carracedo highlighted the growing concern regarding the prevalence of excess weight among children and adolescents, as well as the potential harmful effects of anthropometric measurements in its identification and monitoring in both clinical and epidemiological contexts.
He also presented recent evidence questioning the usefulness of body mass index as an indicator of health risk and discussed the potential negative effects of these practices in school settings, particularly in relation to weight stigma. Finally, he outlined the position of the Roundtable for the Prevention of Eating Disorders, coordinated by the Public Health Agency of Catalonia, which proposes measures to minimize these risks among children and adolescents.
