The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology regrets the recent death of Professor Tristan Platt, an anthropologist, historian, and renowned Andeanist who was very pleasant and approachable.
Tristan Platt (1944-2024) conducted extensive fieldwork in Bolivia and Peru among the Aymara peoples, making essential contributions also from ethnohistory. During his long career, he taught in several Latin American and European countries, was a researcher at the EHESS in Paris, and was Professor Emeritus at the University of St. Andrews.
As a small tribute, we also want to remember his time in our Department in a Master's seminar in the 2012-13 course ("Reorganizing the historical time between the Aymara de Potosí antes y después de la invasión española").
