Today, February 13, World Radio Day, we celebrate the first anniversary of the Radio Sound Archive in Catalonia

13/02/2024

The Radio Sound Archive in Catalonia was presented on February 13, 2023 at the Institute of Catalan Studies, in an event by the Catalan Communication Society to commemorate World Radio Day. During the presentation, an edition of the program L’altra ràdio, from Ràdio 4, directed by Cinto Niqui, promoter of the Arxiu project and professor in the Department of Audiovisual  Communication and Advertising of the UAB, was recorded (“L’altra ràdio” (15/02/2023)).

The Sound Archive arises from the collaboration between the UAB Institute of Communication and the UAB Communication Library and General Newspaper Archive and is part of the digital project of the Observatory of Communication in Catalonia.

This archive's database encompasses sound pieces aired by radio stations within Catalonia's broadcasting bands. Its primary goal is to contribute to the preservation of our nation's historical and radio heritage.

The archived fragments are sourced from collections held by radio enthusiasts, steadfast listeners, media professionals, and contributions from some broadcasters. The project welcomes active citizen involvement.

The Sound Archive was presented in 2023 with more than 2.600 records, 600 stations, 900 programs, 780 presenters and 190 localities. These initial figures have increased considerably during this first year thanks to the contributions of individuals and professionals. The project currently has more than 7.650 records, 870 stations, 2.565 programs, 2.930 presenters and 280 locations.
