On Wednesday, February 21st, the International Mother Language Day was celebrated, a date dedicated to promoting linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide. This year, the Humanities Library and the Journals Room of the UAB joined this commemoration by showcasing various initiatives that emphasise the importance of studying, preserving, and promoting languages.

In this regard, on the ground floor of the Humanities Library, you'll discover a curated selection from the extensive Hypatia Trust collection, comprising nearly 900 books. These volumes delve into a wide array of subjects including literature, culture, society, and history, all explored through the lens of women's perspectives or themes relevant to them, and all presented in the English language.

Additionally, in the same lobby, an exhibition was inaugurated on the ILM project (Linguistic Intermediation by Minors), which explores the role of young people and children as interpreters between their families and public services. This project, led by the MIRAS research group (Mediation and Interpretation: Research in the Social Sphere), driven by the Department of Translation and Interpretation of the UAB, focuses on the study of Interpretation in Public Services (ISP).

Furthermore, the Journals Room hosts an exhibition, not only bibliographical but also photographic, commemorating the 40 years of the Centre for Theoretical Linguistics (CLT) at UAB being celebrated this year. This Centre is a reference in the study of languages and their structures. The aim of the CLT is to study language and natural languages from a theoretical and experimental perspective, promoting research and debate in this field.

Ultimately, the Humanities Library reaffirms its commitment to linguistic diversity and the appreciation of languages in this international celebration of Mother Language, through the preservation of cultural heritage, academic research, and the promotion of innovative projects, such as the ILM project.
