Weiming Zhang (Elaine) Seminar
Description:
Next March 13 at 3:00 p.m., Weiming Zhang's (Elaine) seminar will take place in Room E2.
Weiming Zhang (Elaine) (IE Business School) will present her paper "Socially Responsible Investors and Stock Price Informativeness", joint work with Yong George Yang (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Xintong Zhan (Fudan University) and Yaojia Zhang (Chinese ). University of Hong Kong).
Summary:We study how socially responsible investors (SRI) affect the incorporation of information into price. We find that a higher level of socially responsible institutional ownership results in a lower level of disclosure of current returns on future earnings. Using an exogenous shock to SRI ownership, we show that this relationship is causal. This effect is strengthened when ESG information attracts more attention from SRIs. Meanwhile, the market reaction to earnings news (ESG) becomes weaker (stronger) with increasing SRI holdings. We conclude that SRIs, due to their ESG preferences, weigh less (more) on earnings information (ESG) and therefore make it harder (facilitating) to incorporate earnings information (ESG) into stock prices. Additional evidence indicates that SRIs improve the relationship between current returns and future ESG performance.
