The society retains memory of past events through a critical approach to its documentary heritage. This programme aims to focus on highlighting this heritage, generated over the centuries in Catalonia, which is often difficult to access and for which professional mediation is essential and indispensable. Strengthening the training of professionals with deep knowledge and critical capacity is fundamental for handling, preserving, and making these collections accessible to all citizens.

In the context of this programme, Catalan historical documents can be defined as handwritten records produced during the Ancien Régime in the territories of the former Crown of Aragon, preserved in archives and other institutions whose mission is to safeguard this documentary heritage. However, not all historical documents are preserved in appropriate places, and their location, archival processing, and enhancement must be the ultimate goal of any intervention.

This Specialisation Diploma is the result of recognising a gap in training within the field of archival treatment (that is, the identification, classification, organisation, description, preservation, and communication) of Catalan written documentation from the medieval and modern periods. It therefore arises with the intention of filling this deficit, offering specialised methodological studies in this specific area within archival science.

Despite the recognition that historical documents receive from society and from the various professional sectors involved, there is currently no specialised academic programme that offers training combining, in a balanced way, the traditional knowledge necessarily linked to these information assets with their treatment and exploitation possibilities.
