Prof. Joan Martinez Alier awarded the 1st Bina Agarwal Prize for Ecological Economics
ICTA-UAB researcher Prof. Joan Martinez-Alier was awarded the First Bina Agarwal Prize for Ecological Economics for his outstanding contributions to ecological economics

The award was presented during the 10th INSEE Biennal Conference of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics (INSEE) , which took place on 6-8 November in Hyderabad (India) with the aim of tackling “Climate Change and Disasters: Challenges, Opportunities and Responses”.
This award is in recognition of Joan Martinez-Alier's pioneering work integrating ecological economics with environmental justice. He co-invented the notion of the “environmentalism of the poor” that recognizes the dependence of the poor on the natural environment. The jury recognised his important practical contributions to environmental justice, including the EJAtlas, an online map of conflicts involving natural resources and the environment.
The Prize Jury for the Bina Agarwal Prize for Ecological Economics consisted of Clement Tisdell (Chair), John Gowdy and E. Somanathan.
During the 10th INSEE Biennal Conference, students, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers were brought together to discuss what are the likely impacts of climate change on human and natural ecosystems, how it will affect different sectors and sections of the society, and what are the alternatives and policy options to address the risks posed by climate change and extreme weather events.
