Isabelle Anguelovski, a researcher at ICTA-UAB, was invited by the Special Committee of the European Parliament on the Housing Crisis in the European Union to advise policymakers on key issues such as green gentrification and the need to ensure access to affordable housing.

This special committee, established on January 30, 2025, during the current legislative term, aims to thoroughly analyze the structural causes of the housing crisis affecting numerous European countries and propose concrete, community-wide applicable solutions.

Its main functions include analyzing current housing demands across the European Union, studying existing housing policies in member states, and formulating concrete recommendations to contribute to the development of the future European affordable housing plan promoted by the European Commission.

As part of its first official mission, Isabelle Anguelovski actively participated in the committee’s visit to Catalonia, where the impact of tourism on housing access was examined, especially in cities like Barcelona. In these contexts, the rise of short-term rentals has caused an increase in real estate prices, making it difficult for local residents to access decent housing. Anguelovski’s contributions were key to providing the committee with expert, research-based insights on how to address these challenges.

The choice of Barcelona as the destination for this first visit was positively received by committee members, as it exemplifies many of the housing challenges and opportunities present in Europe.

During 2025, the committee plans to visit at least three more cities, with the next stop being Vienna, Austria’s capital, in July.
