Are you interested in going to the XIII International Conference of the Society for Human Ecology in Lisbon? ICTA-UAB researchers Victoria Reyes-García, Mar Cartró-Sabaté and David García del Amo are organizing a panel on Citizen Science and Participatory Research. If you are interested in making a presentation in this panel, send them your abstract by 30th March! You will receive an answer from them the 30th March.

XIII International Conference of the Society for Human Ecology-“Navegating complexity: Human-environmental solutions for a challenging future”

¿Lisbon 7-10 July 2018

Panel proposal: Using Participatory Research and Citizen Science to understand socio-environmental issues

Organizers: Victoria Reyes-García,  Mar Cartró-Sabaté, and David Garcia-del-Amo

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on research approaches aiming to give non-professional scientists an active role into research dealing with socio-ecological issues. In the global south, researchers working with conservation and development issues have tried to bring Indigenous Peoples and local communities into research design and implementation largely by training them in data collection and discussing research results with them. In the global north, citizen science projects involve citizens in the collection and analysis of environmental data (e.g., temperature, egg hatching events) often oriented to address socio-ecological concerns. These approaches have the potential to bring insights from different knowledge systems to our understanding of socio-ecological issues. In this panel, we aim to bring together researchers and practitioners using information from different knowledge systems in socio-ecological research to share their experiences.  Presentations should address one of the following issues: 1) how participatory research advances our understanding of socio-ecological issues, 2) what are the advantages and disadvantages of participatory research versus other tools, 3) different types of non-scientists participation in research (e.g., monitoring, co-enquiry), and 4) social impacts of participatory processes (e.g., changes in power issues).

If you are interested in presenting a paper in this panel, please send victoria.reyes@uab.cat or marcartro@hotmail.com an e-mail with the names of the authors, the title of the presentation, and a 200-words abstract by 30th March. The 30th March you will get our answer. The panel proposal will then be presented to the SHE conference organizers.
