ICTA-UAB will participate in the next meeting and Summer School of the European Network of Political Ecology (ENTITLE), which will be held on Syros Island (Greece), from 9 to 14 July 2013. The international scientific meeting under the general title "Commons, conflicts and disasters" will analyse disasters and conflicts worldwide with a social, political and economic perspective and include academic lectures, presentations and workshops for participating researchers, organised visits and discussions. Academic and experts from around the globe will meet and teach political ecology to the fellows of the network and some selected external PhD students. The leading social theorist Prof. David Harvey, Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York, is one of the invited speakers and will give a talk on the economic crisis. ¿Summer Schools are a very successful training activity, as they bring together some of the world¿s top scholars in the field, overcome the fragmentation of existing political ecological research in Europe and allow the students to discuss their work with their mentors and international experts. For instance, gold mining conflicts, which are being studied by our PhD fellow Julie De los Reyes from the University of Manchester, can be further discussed and analysed during the course. Maria Christianou is a Greek environmentalist who will present the gold mining conflict in Halkidiki (Greece) and bring Julie views from the grassroots¿, says Giorgos Kallis, ENTITLE coordinator, Professor at the UAB and ICREA researcher. The Marie Curie fellows recruited by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona who will attend the training are: Diego Andreucci, who studies the political ecology of resource dependence in Latin America; Rita Calvario, whose PhD research is about how urbanites become in-rural migrants; and Irina Velicu, a postdoctoral researcher expert on globalization and international relations focused on the environmental conflicts in post-communist countries. During the summer school there will be a public activity entitled "Political Ecology in times of crisis" (Ermouplois, Syros, 10 July). Speakers at this event are Prof. Stefania Barca from University of Coimbra, Portugal and Prof. Joan Martinez Alier from ICTA, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The debate will be moderated by Costis Hadjimichalis, Emeritus Professor at Harokopio University, and the participants will be welcomed by the Vice-Mayor of Syros - Ermoupolis Nikos Almpanopoulos. The event is organised within the ENTITLE project by the Department of Geography, Harokopio University, together with the other 10 organisations that make up the consortium. ENTITLE is an ITN Marie Curie project led by ICTA, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and funded by the European Commission.
