Prosperity is possible without economic growth: this is the main message conveyed by the researcher Federico Demaria of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) during an interview on the Barcelona TV (BTV) programme “Terricoles”, on 21 July.

Demaria presented the Spanish and Catalan edition of his book "Degrowth: A Vocabulary for a New Era" (2015, Icaria Editorial) co-authored with ICTA-UAB researchers, Giacomo d'Alisa and Giorgos Kallis, which claims that “living well with less in common" is possible. The scientist spoke about degrowth theory, which criticizes the current obsession with continuous growth, and defends the need to promote public policies and practices that enable the development of a society based on social justice, sustainability and ecological well-being. Also, Demaria said that the great hope lies with "the alliance between the  degrowth movement coming from the North and the environmental justice movements of the South".

The book "Degrowth: A Vocabulary for a New Era" comprehensively explains the theory and aims to become a reference publication for this concept, linking disciplines such as political ecology, ecological economics, environmental science and sociology. Its aim is to change the thinking and the debate about the economy, generating a social debate and encouraging public and private actors to move towards a fairer, more supportive and environmentally-friendly society.

The book has 51 entries, written by experts in the field, which present the limits and disadvantages of economic growth and social alternatives, and concrete policies through a set of key words that can be useful in the current political debates in order to achieve specific degrowth objectives at local, national and global levels. Entries are written by a group of international scholars, including leading academics like  Juliet Schor, Tim Jackson, Serge Latouche, Joan Martinez-Alier and Arturo Escobar, as well as several researchers from ICTA.
