We deeply regret to inform of the death, on Saturday 11 December, of Antoni Rosell i Melé, ICREA researcher, deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), and Associate Professor at the BABVE of the UAB.

Antonio Rosell i Melé

Antoni Rosell i Melé was a leading figure in the study of natural climate variability of the Earth climate and the impacts of anthropogenic activities in natural environments. His studies contributed to consolidating the prestige of organic geochemical techniques for the reconstruction of past climates.

Trained as an analytical chemist at the Chemical Institute of Sarrià (IQS) in Barcelona, and subsequently as an environmental chemist at the CSIC, he moved to England in 1990 to earn a PhD at the School of Chemistry of the University of Bristol. During his career, he joined J. Maxwell’s group as a post-doctoral researcher also in the Bristol School of Chemistry and in the Department of Fossil Fuels and Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Newcastle, England. In 1999, he became lecturer of the Department of Geography at Durham University, England, until 2001 when he joined the UAB and the ICTA-UAB as ICREA research professor and Associate Professor of the Department of Geography and at the BABVE of the UAB. At the ICTA-UAB, he held positions in the management team and in the coordination of the Doctoral Programme in Environmental Science and Technology.

He was a colleague, friend and scientist who had accompanied the ICTA-UAB since its beginnings. He leaves us forever, but his mark will live on through his work and the people he trained, the friendships he made and the experiences he shared with us all.

The UAB extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, and to all of Antoni’s colleagues at our university.
