Wildlife conservation policies are generating conflicts and major issues amidst the local and indigenous communities inhabiting forest protected spaces. The control over the access and use of natural resources by the states and other actors such as conservation NGOs and international companies are violating the basic rights of the local and indigenous communities who are getting displaced and criminalized in the name of wildlife conservation.

In order to address the multi-facets of these social and environmental conflicts generated by the restrictive conservation policies, and to reflect ahead of the IUCN World Conservation Congress of September 2021 in Marseille, the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas), in collaboration with the American Friends Service Committee, and the Bufete Jurídico de Derechos Humanos in Guatemala, bring together leaders from Guatemala, India and Kenya to discuss and share their experience of resistance in the struggle for recognition of common land rights and cultural identity.

Speakers:

  • Noé Amador, Laguna del Tigre Y Sierra del Locandón, Guatemala
  • Edgar Perez Archila, Bufete de Derechos Humanos, Guatemala
