Abstract
Addressing contemporary social-ecological crises requires systemic change. Post-Growth Economics has emerged as a paradigm to address this challenge. Based on a critical review of existing strands in the field I identify crucial gaps regarding the analysis of the current economic system, thus hampering the potential of Post-Growth Economics to guide systemic change.
This paper seeks to advance Post-Growth Economics by developing a systemic theoretical framework of 21st century capitalism, in order to understand its implications for Post-Growth trajectories. It draws on heterodox schools of economic thought whose potential has so far not been fully harnessed by Post-Growth scholars, including (Marxist) Political Economy, Feminist Economics and heterodox theories of money.
A central result of the analysis is that the renunciation of economic growth, and the reorientation of the economy towards sustainability and wellbeing, necessitate a deeper transformation of social relations constituting capitalist economies than currently envisioned.
