This talk explores China's transition towards an 'ecological civilisation', a strategic vision promoted by the country’s leadership in recent years. It begins by critically examining ecological contradictions resulting from China's rapid economic growth and industrial agricultural practices, highlighting the restoration initiatives at Erhai Lake in Yunnan Province as a key case study. By analysing this significant environmental rehabilitation project, the talk reveals both successes and ongoing challenges within China's broader ecological transition towards a carbon neutral, new energy economy. Furthermore, the talk addresses how historical and ongoing imperialist dynamics continue to impact China and other Global South countries, still seeking a sovereign path out of underdevelopment in the face of a global climate crisis.
