To promote a sustainable, productive, environmentally friendly, and innovative fishing model, one that balances the exploitation of resources with the protection of biodiversity and marine habitats, it is necessary to gain knowledge not only of the resources themselves but also of the marine environment. The project GARRAF_ENMAR has addressed this important issue in close collaboration with fishermen's associations in the marine area of the Garraf coast (NW Mediterranean), a site of community importance (SCI) included in the Natura 2000 network. Through the characterization of the habitats present in fishing grounds and the health assessment of selected species of fishing interest, areas of special interest from a biological and ecological perspective have been identified, and mitigation measures regarding the exploitation of fishing resources have been proposed. These include the use of more selective fishing gear and optimization of fishing methodology that allow obtaining higher quality captures, among others. Present results underscore the importance of applied scientific knowledge to co-management practices in the exploitation of natural resources.
