BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Marta Olazabal is an Ikerbasque Associate Researcher at the BC3, where she leads the Adaptation Research Group. Her research explores the ways urban areas can successfully adapt to climate change from a social and policy point of view.  She was trained as an environmental engineer (School of Engineering of Bilbao) and holds a PhD in Land Economy from the University of Cambridge (UK).

TOPIC OF THE SEMINAR

The ERC project ‘IMAGINE adaptation’ (2023-2027) addresses the imperative of how to evaluate adaptation in urban areas as a contemporary complex phenomenon with implications across governance scales. The current focus on policy progress can be useful as a first step, but it is not indicative of effective adaptation. ‘IMAGINE adaptation’ calls for a broader understanding of success in adaptation: one that transcends technocratic approaches and considers equity, justice and maladaptive issues.
