The talk will explore the vicious cycle of urban development, exploring the dispersion of urban occupation fuelled and fuelling ever more efficient transport systems (the illusion of speed). It will explore the role of proximity in accessibility of people to desired opportunities, and how it has been lost over time, as well as their consequences for sustainable development and quality of life. The talk will end with an onlook on recent research and future research direction regarding this pressing issue.

Cecília Silva is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), and senior researcher at CITTA – the Research Centre for Territory, Transports and Environment – where she coordinates the transversal thematic area on Accessibility and Mobilities. She specializes in Urban Planning and Mobility Management, with a core focus on crafting sustainable, liveable cities that provide citizens with enriching experiences. Her main research interests focus on accessibility planning and integrated land use and transport policies for human-scale cities, developed in close collaboration with local authorities.
