The digitization of cultural heritage is crucial for several fundamental reasons. First, it enables more effective preservation of cultural assets. By creating high-quality digital copies, the risk of loss due to deterioration, natural disasters, or conflict is reduced. These digital replicas ensure that cultural information and value are preserved for future generations. Moreover, digitization facilitates access to culture. Digitized collections can be explored from anywhere in the world, overcoming geographical barriers and allowing a wider audience to appreciate and study cultural heritage. This fosters education and interest in history and culture.
Digital technology also enables new forms of research and analysis. Digital models of ancient or modern objects of cultural interest allow experts to study artefacts without physically handling them, reducing the risk of damage. In addition, these tools open up possibilities for virtual recreations and immersive experiences that enrich the understanding of heritage.
This course will enable the integration of tools such as photogrammetry, laser scanning, and virtual modelling into the regular workflow of professionals in cultural studies, archaeology, and history, as well as museum staff and other institutions involved in the study and dissemination of heritage. It will improve the accuracy of their records, support digital preservation, and create new ways of presenting cultural heritage to the public.
These techniques will revolutionize the approach of those working in cultural and social fields to document, preserve, and share our history.
