The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 marked a radical shift in access to generative artificial intelligence, with an immediate impact on the educational field. Its ease of use and ability to generate text or answer questions quickly made it a widely adopted tool among students. Universities in countries such as the United States began integrating it into digital skills training, while debates emerged around its ethical and legal implications. In just five months, nearly half of Cambridge students had already used the tool. Unlike other digital resources—such as spelling and grammar checkers or writing assistants—generative AI tools like ChatGPT have transformed public perception of artificial intelligence by offering accessible, fast, and effective text generators. Their ability to analyze linguistic parameters and produce coherent, contextualized content far exceeds human capabilities.

In this context, the microcredential begins with a global overview of generative AI, covering both its functioning and potential, as well as the ethical implications of its use. The goal is for educators to understand how generative AI can be effectively integrated into Spanish language teaching tasks, with a special focus on discourse competence, both written and oral. The course then explores various paradigmatic cases of the transformative impact of generative AI on traditional language-related technological tools: machine translation, voice interaction, text creation, linguistic analysis, and more. In the face of these challenges, the role of the language expert is key to ensuring critical use of these tools, providing specialized linguistic knowledge to interpret generated results, identify potential errors, and guide students toward coherent, appropriate, and truthful discourse production.

The course is aimed at teachers of Spanish language and literature, as well as all educators interested in developing discourse competence -written and oral- as atransversal skill.

Contents

- Introduction to generative artificial intelligence
- Integration of generative AI in the teaching of the Spanish language
- Practical cases: machine translation tools and oral interactions with AI systems
- Linguistic knowledge and discourse assessment

Career opportunities

This course addresses the ongoing training needs of Spanish language teachers in compulsory and post-compulsory secondary education, as well as teachers of other subjects who are interested in tackling the challenges and opportunities posed by generative artificial intelligence in language teaching. The microcredential offers a practical first approach to adapting Spanish language instruction, taking into account the emergence of generative AI not only in education but also in other professional settings and everyday communication.
