World Food Day
Description:
Within the framework of the Healthy and Sustainable Campus (Campus SiS) project, the UAB and Justícia Alimentària are organising the International Day of Sustainable Food, which will take place on 16 October (World Food Day) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event has the support of the Catalan Development Cooperation Agency and aims to highlight and promote sustainable food practices and responsible consumption among the university community. Participatory activities will be offered in which local producers and members of the university community will meet to reflect on food and economic models that favor sustainability, proximity and social justice.

The IndiFest Universitats, organised with the collaboration of the Catalan Institute of Anthropology (ICA), dedicates sessions to five Catalan universities with the aim of decentralising the IndiFest and bringing it closer to the young student audience.

Seminar: "The global ecocide and what to do about it: case study from Palestine". Speaker: Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh
Description:
In his talk Prof. Qumsiyeh explains the global catastrophic situation that impacts sustainable human and natural communities: climate, change, habitat destruction, pollution, overxploitation of natural resources, invasive species, and wars/conflicts. Using a case study from Palestine, Qumsiyeh offers analysis of symptoms and diagnosis adding discussion of therapy and prognosis for our challenged planet. He articulates how working for environmental justice and for human rights is key to peace and sustainability and not just in Western Asia but globally. He highlights the model work of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (palestinenature.org).
Bio
Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh is founder and volunteer director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability, Bethlehem University (PIBS see palestinenature.org and review our 10 year booklet and annual reports here). Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh previously served at US universities including Tennessee, Duke and Yale. Qumsiyeh published over 250 scientific papers, over 30 book chapters, hundreds of articles, and several books including “Sharing the Land of Canaan” and “Popular Resistance in Palestine” on topics ranging from environmental impact of colonization to environmental and climate justice to cultural heritage to human rights to biodiversity conservation to cancer. He served on the board of 11 human rights advocacy organizations and oversaw a number of projects ranging from formulating the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to empowerment projects with farmers, women, and children that benefitted tens of thousands. He is laureate of the Paul K. Feyerabend Foundation award the Takreem award, Peaceseeker of the year award, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2025.

Inauguration of the 2025/26 academic year at the Faculty of Law
Description:
Lawyer Bárbara Díaz Santis, coordinator of Red Cross Catalonia and lecturer in public international law at the UAB, will give the inaugural conference of the 2025/26 academic year at the Faculty of Law in an institutional event taking place on 17 October at 12 noon in the faculty's Aula Magna. The conference will focus on international humanitarian law and is entitled "El Derecho Internacional Humanitario frente a los desafíos contemporáneos: límites normativos, exigibilidad y reconstrucción postconflicto". The event will also include the institutional speeches of UAB Rector Javier Lafuente and Faculty Dean Ricardo Esteban.

Final event of SustainEd project
Description:
The event marks the conclusion of the Erasmus+ SustainEd project, which is designed to enhance the competencies of university students and doctoral candidates in the domains of sustainability and the circular economy.
The event, scheduled for 17 October from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Digital Lab, will provide a platform for the presentation of the project's culminating results and a collaborative examination of the resources that have been produced during the course of the project.
