The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has created a virtual map of its campus, resulting in a large walk around campus thanks to the over 1,000 360º images captured (a total of more than 12,000 photographs were needed); it is probably one of the largest virtual tours ever created.

By using the technology offered by Google Maps and Street View, users can visit the campus with their devices through the over eight kilometres of virtual area, with a graphic quality that surpasses the common standards used by Google's technologies: the Plaça Cívica, parks, common areas, sports facilities, bus stops and even the entrance to the majority of campus buildings. The platform also includes all of the teaching units of the Faculty of Medicine as well as areas which already offered virtual tours, such as the Vila Universitària and the UAB Casa Convalescència in Barcelona. It will continue to grow with the inclusion of new areas and images will be constantly renewed.

Apart from being able to visit the campus from any part of the world, this new service offered by the UAB contains eminently practical aspects such as the possibility of locating teaching centres, bus stops, libraries, restaurants, and also leisure and cultural aspects such as visiting the campus through its works of art and discovering hidden corners of its natural surroundings.

The company Agència Capture was in charge of creating the tour, a digital imaging and marketing company certified by Google and specialised in producing 360º virtual tours. The whole virtual tour has been programmed with an interactive technology which uses and enhances the services of Google Maps and Street View, allowing to personalise and adapt these resources to the needs of a university campus such as the UAB.

This technology facilitates navigating within the tour and offers GPS indications on how to reach locations and visualise where different elements are on the map through various layers. The virtual tour of the UAB is 100% compatible with 3D and VR glasses, allowing for a totally immersive experience, and can be viewed from any computer or mobile device. The tour allows interacting with the contents, following and counting the virtual areas visited, saving them or sharing them via e-mail or any of the social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc.
