Ideal student profile

The ideal profile is that of graduates in the areas of Biology, Environmental Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Agricultural and/or Forest Engineering, Food Engineering and Technology or graduates holding equivalent qualifications, who are proactive, able to work in new environments and work in teams. They must have prior university education in the area of Biosciences, Biohealth Sciences, or Engineering with a basic knowledge of Plant Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics. Students who apply for this course should have a clear vocation to train as researchers in the field of plants, their products and applications.

Basic skills

  • Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously.

Specific skills

  • Apply knowledge of functional mechanisms of various different organizational levels in plants to the characterization of growth and development processes of the whole plant organism.
  • Propose and analyze ad hoc solutions derived from plant research, in accordance with the situations and needs of each case.
  • Apply biotechnological cell factory methods to plants and fungi to obtain new products.
  • Apply knowledge of plant molecular genetics in different scientific and industrial areas.
  • Explain the processes of obtaining genetically modified plants and their use.
  • Identify and explain social and ethical responsability in the obtainment and use of genetically-modified plants and recognise the relevant legal aspects of this
  • Identify and use Bio-Computer Science tools to be applied to the genetic, evolutionary and functional study of plants.
  • Conceive, design, manage and develop a scientific, technical or industrial project in Biology, Genomics and Biotechnology of plants and fungi, and be able to interpret and extract knowledge of the same

Cross-curricular skills

In master’s degree qualifications, the UAB treats both the concepts of general competence and transferable competence as equivalents.
  • Use and manage bibliographical information and computer resources in the area of study.
  • Use scientific terminology to argue the results of research and present them in English both orally and in writing in an international environment.
  • Develop critical reasoning in the area of study and in relation to the scientific and business environment.
  • Synthesize, and analyze alternatives and debate critically.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Analyze research results to obtain new products or processes, evaluating their industrial and commercial viability for transfer to society.
