Ideal student profile

Physiotherapists motivated to extend their knowledge in the area of Physiotherapy of Sport and Physical Activity, both at the clinical-care level and in research, whether they are professionals with years of work experience or recent graduates who see their future in this more specialized area in Physiotherapy.
Students should have an ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, in which communication, and a respect for the competences of and consideration for all health-care professionals is basic to carry out their work with the greatest efficacy and efficiency.
It is important that students have the necessary empathy to understand sportspersons in every situation that they face and have the capacity to refer them to specialists when therapeutic or clinical needs demand so.
It is possible that at times they may have to work in extreme situations in which students must show an attitude adapted to such reality. In addition they should have an ethical sense of the profession.

Specific skills

  • Identify the anatomical, biomechanical, physiological and pathological changes that are caused to the tissue of the musculoskeletal system when submitted to the various different demands of Physical Activity.
  • Identify the causes and mechanisms which produce sports injuries in different sports disciplines.
  • Reach a correct physiotherapeutic diagnosis by carrying out an appropriate examination adapted to the needs of each injury and the typology of each sportsperson.
  • Plan the objectives of each phase of recovery establishing objective criteria for carrying it out.
  • Choose the physiotherapeutic technique in the recovery process most suitable for each injury and the evolutionary stage of the same, and apply it correctly.
  • Plan programmes for a return to physical activity in free exercise or competition.
  • Prepare programmes for functional prevention and re-adaptation, personalized for every sportsperson which allow for the integration of patterns of correct movement, using motor control.
  • Design and develop research work in the area of physiotherapy applying scientific method.

Cross-curricular skills

  • Work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Resolve problems arising in the different stages of evolution of each sports injury.
  • Take decisions in each of the processes or specific situations which demands a specific decision on a standardized protocol.
  • Adopt legal standards and integrate ethical and professional values in the practice of physiotherapy.
