Basic skills

The overall aim is for students to acquire the specific linguistic, cultural and instrumental knowledge and skills needed to solve the problems that arise in situations of contact between cultures. The specific aims are to acquire a basic knowledge of social, economic and political structures, and customs, beliefs, ideologies and cultures of East Asia, underpinned by a command of the languages studied.

Specific skills

  • Know and understand phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic structures of East Asian languages.
  • Know, understand, describe, analyse and assess the history, thought and literature of East Asia.
  • Know, understand, describe and analyse the values, ideologies and beliefs of East Asia, as well as the methodological and ethical principles fostering relationships in international and intercultural contexts.
  • Identify, analyse, differentiate, summarise and explain the principles that govern variation in East Asian languages.
  • Recognise connotations behind specific cultural references and evaluate their influence in interlingual and intercultural communication. Apply these skills to social relations, protocol and negotiations during decision-making processes with the aim of facilitating relations within international and intercultural contexts.
  • Transmit clearly and precisely in one's own language information on topics expressed in a working language of East Asia, both orally and in writing.
