The exercise of power during the Ancien Régime was organized through a wide variety of jurisdictions that operated simultaneously over the territory and its inhabitants, ranging from the feudal lord and/or the municipality to the monarch. This course offers a comprehensive overview of the institutions within the Catalan sphere that, in this context, reflected this exercise of power through the production of documentary collectionsboth secular institutions (chanceries and institutional scriptoria at the general and local levels, courts, notarial offices, and patrimonial entities) and Church institutions (parish, cathedral, diocesan, monastic-conventual archives, and congregations, among others).
This analysis aims to support the correct identification of the producers, the understanding of their historical evolution over those centuries, knowledge of the legal and political framework in which they operated, and the basic identification and study of their documentary output. Ultimately, all these elements, together with the archival practices of each institution, have shaped and explain the creation of their documentary collections, and are essential for understanding, organizing, and classifying them coherently.
Thus, students will be able to acquire the necessary competencies to identify the producers and the main types of documents they generated, the legal-political context that governed them, the essential characteristics of the documentation, and the specific vocabulary involved. All of this aims to provide them with the knowledge and tools required to develop proposals for organizing these types of collections, in accordance with the general principles of archival science, particularly those of provenance and original order.

Contents
This course provides the tools and competencies needed to identify and analyse the various types of historical collections and their producers within the Catalan context, both secular (chanceries, municipalities, notarial offices, and patrimonial entities) and ecclesiastical (parish, cathedral, diocesan, monastic-conventual archives, and congregations, among others). It equips students with the ability to correctly identify the producers, the legislation applicable in each case, the main associated documentary production, and the specific terminology.All of this aims to enable the development of classification and organisation proposals for these collections in accordance with their genesis and in compliance with the universal principles of archival science, particularly the principles of provenance and original order.
