The UAB leads the European project Se-bioFORtified ALfaLfa for Se-enriched Dairy products (Se4All) to produce selenium-enriched milk products and cheeses by biofortifying alfalfa with this micronutrient through foliar application. The aim is to find a solution to reach an adequate level of selenium in diets poor in this mineral.

The project organises a science café at El Cau Restaurant (UAB). The talk will be given by Roberto Boada, researcher at the UAB Department of Chemistry. This conference will allow professionals and researchers to share their knowledge about chemistry and biofortification with students. The interaction with the public will also be through gamification activities during the event.

The public engagement community of practice of the online research institute SMART-ER, focused on smart and sustainable regions and part of the framework of the ECIU University, organises a series of seminars on public engagement with the aim of facilitating the implementation of citizen science projects at university.

The first of the seminars, entitled "Utopia is a necessary country. Future workshops in the context of engaged research", will take place on 21 November at 12 noon on the Zoom platform. The session will discuss future workshops which will be conducted by the Austrian writer, journalist, historian and peace activist Robert Jungk. These workshops will offer spaces in which citizens can participate in critical debates, creative planning with a view on the future and the creation of alternative solutions to topics of interest. The future workshops have been used for over 60 years in areas such as community development, political campaigns and urban planning, just to name a few. After a brief introduction, the online seminar will focus on the potential of these future workshops as as active participation research element within the methodology of committed research initiatives.

This first seminar will be offered by Mathias Urban, head of the Desmond Chair in Early Childhood Education and director of the Research Centre on Early Childhood (ECRC) at the Dublin City University in Ireland. Mathias Urban is lecturer in Pedagogy at the University of Stavanger, Norway, and lecturer and fellow at the Centre for Education Policy EDPolicyFORWARD at George Mason University in the United States. He works on issues related to integrated systems in early childhood, diversity and equality, social justice and professionalism in different socio-cultural contexts. Winner of several awards, Mathias Urban has over 20 years of experience in the design and leadership of international collaborative research projects and is member of the European Commission's expert group in early childhood education and care.

The UAB's Institute for Ancient Middle Eastern Studies (IEPOA) organises the activity "Yes, wonderful things! – Howard Carter" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

The conference will be held by José Lull, associate professor of Egyptology at the UAB, who will speak on the life of Howard Carter, his work in Egypt, his achievements and failures, and his remarkable persistence and strong will to find the tomb of Tutankhamun until finally reaching the magical moment on 26 November 1922, in which after perforating the tomb's second enclosure wall, he saw "wonderful things".

The organisation of the event includes the collaboration of the Department of Antiquity and Middle Age Studies, the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, the Office of the Vice Rector of Communication and Culture, and the Humanities Library.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and EXPERTISE 

Dr Daniel Garcia-Castellanos is a CSIC researcher with expertise in the fields of geodynamics, surface processes, and Solid Earth geoscience. He works at the Department of Structure and Dynamics of the Earth and Crystallography (Geo3Bcn), where he develops physical-mathematical models coupling the physics of plate tectonics and processes occurring at the surface of the Earth. 

 
TOPIC of the KEYNOTE 

Some of his studies support the idea that the Mediterranean Sea underwent a desiccation period known as “Messinian Salinity Crisis” - after being isolated from the world’s ocean due to the collision between the tecnonic plates of Africa and Eurasia - followed by a catastrophic reflooding through the strait of Gibraltar 5 million year ago. The keynote will encompass recent research on the Messinian Salinity Crisis and discuss implications of this episode.

As part of the 23rd edition of "Satudary Physics", on 4 February, UAB Department of Physics lecturer Xavier Àlvarez will give a conference entitled "From Hottest to Coldest, a View of Physics Through Entropy". The conference will take place at the conference hall of the faculties of Science and Bioscience. Registration is free but seating is limited. There will also be a presentation at 11:45 a.m. of the bachelor's degree in Physics and the double degrees in Physics + Mathematics and in Physics + Chemistry.

The seminar will be offered by Xavier Barcons, General Director of the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO). It will serve to present the telescopes that make up the observatory and the most important discoveries made in the past 60 years since the facilities were created, as well as the future plans for this enormous scientific structure. The seminar will be offered on-site and also online on the ZOOM platform.
