QUIT Seminar - Alexandra Seehaus
“Interpreting Workplace Conflict: Class Consciousness among Platform Food Couriers”
Dear all,
On 19 October, a new session of the QUIT Seminars will take place, featuring a presentation by Alexabndra Seehaus , a postdoctoral researchet at IGOP, entitled:
“Interpreting Workplace Conflict: Class Consciousness among Platform Food Couriers”
Research on platform labour has generated important insights into worker mobilisation, labour unrest, and collective organisation. While the literature has primarily approached conflict through its visible manifestations in protest, resistance, and collective action, less attention has been paid to how workers themselves perceive and interpret the underlying tensions and antagonisms they encounter at work, particularly among the much larger group of workers who remain unorganised
Drawing on 32 biographical interviews with platform food couriers in England and Germany conducted between 2021 and 2023, the paper examines how workers understand workplace issues such as pay determination, algorithmic management, information asymmetries, insecurity, and platform control, as well as their broader perceptions of social class and class divisions in contemporary society.
Preliminary findings suggest substantial variation in how couriers perceive workplace conflict and class relations
