QUIT Seminar
¿Hombres de rosa? Una exploración sociológica a la influencia de factores ocupacionales y sociodemográficos a la presencia de hombres en ocupaciones feminizadas en España
Dear colleagues,
We are writing to inform you about the last session of the year for the QUIT Seminars, which will take place next Tuesday, December 16th. Andrea Martín Gallego, a predoctoral researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid, will present her study:
¿Hombres de rosa? Una exploración sociológica a la influencia de factores ocupacionales y sociodemográficos a la presencia de hombres en ocupaciones feminizadas en España
Conventional sociological research on occupational segregation by gender has focused on studying the barriers to access that women face in male-dominated occupations. This study shifts its focus to men to address horizontal segregation in the labor market; that is, the overrepresentation or underrepresentation of men in occupations based on the nature of the tasks and the content of the work. Although feminized occupations (FDOM) are often less valued socially and characterized by more precarious working conditions, the men who perform them tend to be rewarded in other ways. Paradoxically, they remain the group most reluctant to transgress these gender boundaries in the labor market.
This study analyzes how working conditions and sociodemographic factors are associated with the presence of men in the FDOM (Family-Dominated Labor Forces) and whether these associations are stable over time. A time series analysis combining correlation and bootstrap techniques (Beh and Lombardo 2024; and Romanos and López-Roche, 2023) is performed on quarterly data from the Spanish Labour Force Survey (EPA), covering the period from the financial crisis to the disruption caused by COVID-19.
