Videoconference: TopUrbi – Digital edition of Antonio de Alcedo’s Diccionario geográfico (1785–1789). The challenges of a digital humanities project.

Videoconference organised by the UAB Master’s in Digital Humanities and Heritage, in collaboration with the AHCISP group (Department of Anthropology).

The session, led by Jean Paul Zúñiga and Carmen Brando (EHESS, Centre de Recherches Historiques, Paris), presents the TopUrbi project and discusses the challenges of digitally editing Antonio de Alcedo’s Diccionario geográfico (1785–1789) within the framework of digital humanities.

The TopUrbi project studies urbanisation in the Spanish Empire during the 18th century using Alcedo’s Diccionario and other contemporary sources. It will create a geolocated atlas and a toponymic database of towns, villages, and cities in the Americas, useful for historians, anthropologists, and linguists. It applies digital humanities methodologies, such as XML-TEI, GIS, and language models, to manage the heterogeneity and geolocation of toponyms. It is an international, transdisciplinary project combining research, training, and the creation of reusable geohistorical resources.
