Online Seminar on the CEIPAC (UB) Amphoric Epigraphy Database

The CEIPAC Group at the University of Barcelona will host an online seminar to present their pioneering amphoric epigraphy database, a landmark project in Digital Humanities. The session will feature Lluís Pons Pujol, Jordi Martín, and Oriol Morillas.

In 1995, CEIPAC launched a website and database on amphoric epigraphy created in 1989, making it two years earlier than Google. The group’s goal is not only to create a digital corpus of Latin and Greek stamps on amphorae, but also to provide an open-access, continuously updated research tool, enabling a variety of analyses: statistical, typological, chronological, and more.

According to the researchers, the strength of the database lies in the standardisation and uniformity of the data, allowing the management of the vast amount of information derived from amphoric inscriptions. As they note, today the volume of data exceeds human capacity, and only Digital Humanities tools can provide an effective and accessible research resource for all those studying Antiquity.

• Oriol Morillas – BA in History (2021) and Master in Cultures and Languages of Antiquity (2024), University of Barcelona.

The seminar will be held online and is open to anyone interested in epigraphy, archaeology, and Digital Humanities.
