AE-IC Pays Tribute to Dr Rosa Franquet Calvet at the 10th International Communication Research Conference

The 10th International Communication Research Conference of the Spanish Association for Communication Research (AE-IC), held on 19 May in Pontevedra, paid tribute to Dr Rosa Franquet Calvet, a leading figure in audiovisual communication and the first woman in Spain to attain a full professorship in this field

The city of Pontevedra hosted the 10th International Communication Research Conference of AE-IC on 19 May, one of the leading academic gatherings in the field of communication at both national and international levels. Described by its organisers as a major milestone for the host institution, the conference brought together 368 selected research projects and experts from 30 countries, consolidating its position as a key forum for discussing technological transformations and the challenges posed by disinformation.

As part of this edition, the academic community paid a heartfelt tribute to Dr Rosa Franquet Calvet (Barcelona, 1955), Full Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in recognition of her outstanding contributions to research, teaching and academic leadership.

A pioneer in her field, Dr Franquet was the first woman in Spain to obtain a full professorship in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising. Throughout her career, she has promoted key initiatives for the advancement of communication research, including the creation of the Research Group on Image, Sound and Synthesis (GRISS) and the journal Área Cinco. From 2021 to 2024, she served as President of AE-IC, contributing significantly to the strengthening and international projection of the association.

An expert in new technologies, digital content and gender perspectives, Dr Franquet has fostered a critical, innovative and inclusive vision of journalism and communication. Her career includes international academic appointments, the coordination of doctoral programmes and participation in the evaluation of leading research projects.

The tribute held in Pontevedra highlighted an exemplary academic career and a decisive contribution to the consolidation of communication studies in Spain, leaving a lasting impact on both the university sector and the wider academic community.
