David Monciardini (University of Torino) will present his paper “‘Just measure’: The normative microfoundations of measuring and communicating business sustainability,” along with Laura Rocca (University of Brescia) and Steffen Böhm (University of Exeter Business School).
Abstract:
This article argues that the literature on measuring business sustainability has overlooked the normative microfoundations involved in the emergence of sustainability evaluation tools and practices. Drawing on a pragmatist approach, we investigate organizational sustainability measuring practices as situated in networks of value practices within an Italian social cooperative, CAUTO. Our conceptualization entails three intertwined performative valuation practices: balancing values, valorization of things and persons, and representational evaluation. Our conceptualization extends the current reliance on representational theories of business evaluation, advancing an integrative, more situated, and pragmatist approach to measuring business sustainability.
