Walk the UAB! For a healthier and more sustainable campus

Walking as a way of transport is the most common way to exercise for adult people because it is an activity easily introduced to any action or dynamic in our daily lifestyle. This is why now a days when we walk is seen as a sustainable solution, not only in transportation manners but also as a public health issue.

In order to encourage active mobility, it is of maximum importance to know the different characteristics of the environment that encourage people to walk as a form of daily transport. Also, the distance toward the destinations has been revealed as the most important factor when determining whether people decide to use the private motor vehicle or walk.

The WHO (World Health Organization) considers that less than 5km are likely to be covered on foot. Right now, UAB Campus is a space of 230ha that offers affordable distances and times when traveling by food alongside with a friendly design of the campus (streets and spaces without from traffic, green spaces...).

In October 2021, the UAB presented an initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle among the university community. Through the "Walk the UAB" For a healthier and more sustainable campus" campaing, the University carried out several number of actions focused on health care and sustainability. The last action that has been carried out was the creation of several videos that show the different itineraries on foot between different points of interest in Campus and how long it takes to reach them. The videos can be viewed below.

All this plans and activities are being englobed in the "Healthy and Sustainable Campus Project" and the "UAB Mobility Plan 2018-24".
